Photo of Benny Gallagher For sheer quality and distinction you need look no further than the career of Benny Gallagher. One half of hit makers and blue chip songwriters Gallagher & Lyle; he began his career as a staff writer with the Beatles Music Publishing Co. Apple, writing songs for Apple Records biggest artist Mary Hopkin. Benny has always considered his days at Apple and especially the constant encouragement of Paul McCartney, as the single most important factor in his development as a songwriter.
In 1970 his and Graham Lyle's astute composing ability propelled the band McGuinness-Flint to the top of the charts with hit songs " When I'm Dead and Gone " and " Malt and Barley Blues ". Then came the duo's own string of successes - the richly romantic " Heart on my Sleeve " and " I Wanna Stay With You ". Their Breakaway album was a huge success - even more so when the title track was "covered" by Art Garfunkel and Don Williams took "Stay Young" to the No. 1 spot in the Country charts in the U.S.A

.One of the last songs to be recorded by Gallagher and Lyle " A Heart in New York" was performed by both Simon and Garfunkel and Garth Brooks in their concerts in Central Park to audiences of 500,000 and 750,000 respectively. On record he has worked with Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend, Ronnie Lane, Ronnie Wood, Gary Brooker, Georgie Fame, Mary Hopkin, Elkie Brooks, Ralph McTell, Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention, as well as Blues legends Arthur " Big Boy " Crudup (who wrote " That's Alright Mama " for Elvis Presley ) and Champion Jack Dupree. Between song-writing visits to Nashville, and composing soundtracks for film and television he has toured Australia, the Middle and Far East, Europe and the U.K. as bassist and vocalist with The Manfreds and Dennis Locorriere - (The Voice of Dr. Hook).Benny has recently been made a companion of LIPA - Paul McCartney's music school in Liverpool - along with Joan Armatrading (a fellow member of the APMAP panel at LIPA which seeks to elevate the standard of music education in the U.K. and abroad) and the architect of Punk Malcolm MacLaren. He is Project Champion for S.M.A.R T. The School of Music and Recording Technology in Ayr, Scotland…( update provided as required… )As a member of the Directorate of RE-PRO The Guild of Record Producers and Recording Engineers and more recently a patron under its new title of MPG, he went on to become a founding Director and the Chairman of P@MRA - The Performing Artists Media Rights Association - which administers the right to equitable remuneration for U.K. Performers and was, therefore, able to achieve a long term ambition by visiting Japan to successfully conclude a deal with Geidankyo (The Japanese equivalent of P@MRA) which will provide U.K. performers with equitable remuneration from Japan - for the very first time ! This past year has seen payments of millions of pounds through P@MRA to U.K performers from territories such as Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, and the United Kingdom with more to follow due to recently concluded deals with Spain, Italy, Ireland and Greece. In response to a request from Art Critic and Television Producer W.Gordon Smith (sadly deceased) , Benny was particularly pleased to have had the chance to contribute to the book Fallen Angels which features the paintings of the Scottish Artist Jack Vettriano…" it's a fine book and also a lasting memory of an old friend".
